dearest all,
As of the beginning of June 2011, I am no longer posting to this blog. It will stand as a record of my time in Iceland, sure, but if you want something that is getting updated, head on over to the small blue cat.
best,
eric

the sea.

looking from home, out to where i am headed.

the destination, or maybe it is just a light house.

i've seen a lot of the sea today.

look, here is a bit of the sea. also, notice the porous texture of those rocks?
most rocks that i've seen here are similar
i took a walk out on seltjarnarnes peninsula, there is a lighthouse out at the end, and it is quite beautiful.
notice the ubiquitous mountains in the background
walking out that far, i realise a bit more what iceland is- my experience thus far being chiefly within the city limits. i suppose that i was still in the city, but a bit farther away than usual. far enough away to make it seem small against a backdrop of mountains.
looking back at the city center from out here.
you can see the square top of the cathedral,
and the pointy top of hallgrimskirkja
while walking i saw a few runners. seems windy to me. the sea feels as if it is on all sides when i am out there. it is a weird and awesome thing. thanks to yogan for suggesting this little trip.
ohio.

when i finally decide to return, i turn around and start walking back down the path. an icelander, standing up on the rocks, offers me a lift back into to town, and naturally, i accept. [i think his name is páli. i am not yet adept at icelandic pronunciation.]
you can see the blue roof of the house that is next to the SÍM house
i'll get a proper picture of the SÍM house eventually, jay.
it is the one to the right of the blue roof, it is 4 stories
the first three are light, and the top floor is blue.
on the way back, we talk of things like ohio, the sea, the mountains. he is from a smallish town in the mountains. what was a long walk alone becomes a very short ride, the car and conversation making the distance nominal at best. i am pretty sure that i have never gotten a lift from a stranger in the states. i am also pretty sure that i would not feel very comfortable about it in the states. iceland is noticeably different. [but i bet you knew that.]

ducks! i guess it isn't so different after all!

here are some pictures, just of the ground, so that you can get an idea of the look of things that are close. [seeing as all of the above pictures are things at some distance.]

been meeting a lot of artist sorts also here in iceland. very interesting.
i'll be uploading some new gifs soon.

  1. Wow, Ohio looks beautiful. [a bit more so than the Ohio I'm familiar with] Also, you're hitch-hiking casually, I can't believe it! Sounds like a very nice place with some very nice people. I'm so glad you're getting to do this!
