dearest all,
As of the beginning of June 2011, I am no longer posting to this blog. It will stand as a record of my time in Iceland, sure, but if you want something that is getting updated, head on over to the small blue cat.
best,

more of the peninsula

dearest all,
in this post there is more of the strange peninsula. chiefly the second day of the one-and-one-half day trip. i hope that you enjoy this list of photos.
a bit of sun. you can rest assured that it was bracketed by rain and hail
these next few pictures are in stykkisholmur. this big rock is parked in the sea, by some boats.
a fine cliff. there was a sign that probably said something like:
we don't recommend climbing this. [but really,
i don't know what it said.]
we went to the pool first thing in the morning in stykkisholmur, and the sulphur content of the hotpots there was recorded at 320 mg/L that seems like a lot. they smelled kind bad at first, but i got used to it pretty quick, probably because it was snowing.

here's another view of the nice cliff, this time i am up on the top.  how did that happen?
after the pool, we had some tasty fish soup, and then climbed a handsome stairway up to the top of this big rock.
a weird space building. adds to the lunar feel of a lot of this landscape, i suppose.
[as seen from atop the cliffy rock]

still atop the rock.

...still...
and now we are back on the road.
there were a few different lava fields. sadly i don't have too much documentation of them because i was running around, jumping into holes and sticking my head in crevasses. maybe next time i'll do better.
moss in the lava field is superthick. even though these rocks are jagged and nasty, i was standing barefoot on the moss and it was really excellent.  i wouldn't be surprised if the moss is over an inch thick.

how about these weird lava rocks, eh?

lava field in a big way

i think that the concentration levels of pretty things here is much too high.
if everything was really boring this would be magnificent,
but here in iceland- meh; same ol, same ol.
black rocks are hard to see in the evening.

kirkjusfell, a personal favorite
good lord, this place is just too much.
[but really, with the weather jumping around between rain and hail and sunshine so much,
rainbows are pretty common over here.]

a black sand beach. [aka really cool]

looking away from the sea on the black sand beach.
in the end, we drove all the back to reykjavik, nearly running out of gas a few times. most hostels and guesthouses are not open until next month [only in the summer] so we were a bit homeless- making the drive back a necessary evil. driving in the dark brought back some good memories. all in all it was a lovely trip. i am quite glad to have had the chance to get out and see some of this beautiful country, and i hope that i will be able to do so again soon.  i've more photos, so i'll keep posting, i suppose

with warmest regards,
eric

  1. You said, "I think that the concentration levels of pretty things here is much too high. if everything was really boring this would be magnificent." I agree!! I wish you well in keeping your perspective of magnificent.
